Tallowood’s view of educating children is reflected in the words of Ken Robinson, who said that “Education is more like gardening than manufacturing….gardeners know that there are conditions under which plants flourish and that is true of all human communities….”.

Tallowood Steiner School offers a human centered approach to teaching and learning, based on a view of the developmental stages of childhood.  Working with age appropriate teaching and learning programs and methodology, forms the heart of our approach. Every child is innately artistic and creative and each stage of childhood brings its own particular developmental characteristics and needs. A five year old is not same as an 8 or 10 year old and children at each age need learning experiences that meet them where they are developing right now. The school environment, the activities that we engaged our students in and vitally, the school timetable, need to be tailored to suit the student’s needs for a broad and rich tapestry of learning experiences throughout each day. Children are learning all the time, not only during set, formal lessons. .

At Tallowood we believe that teaching and learning is best approached through imaginative and  artistic pathways, directly addressing how children naturally learn. In our richly integrated curriculum, art is not a separate subject, rather it is at  the heart of all subjects and  curriculum content is taught through the arts. Speech, artistic movement, music, painting, drawing, modeling and creating are inherent in our teaching and learning activities. Problem solving is also an art in itself, which is learned and practiced in context to our teaching and learning methodology. Tallowood’s educational situation is unique.
